BCGS Intensive Week Course:

Reactions and targets for low-energy nuclear physics experiments - Hands-on

16.-20. September 2019, University of Cologne, Germany

General Information:

The intensive week will include lectures and hands-on sessions given by renowned experts in the corresponding fields. The target audience is master and doctoral students, but others are also welcome. The first part on nuclear reactions will cover elastic and inelastic scattering, optical model potentials, selected reactions with exotic nuclei, as well as an introduction to calculations using the code FRESCO. The last two days will be dedicated to methods and techniques for the preparation of targets for low-energy nuclear experiments, including hands-on sessions for beginners.

Please, send your questions and registration requests to Dr. Andrey Blazhev (email: a.blazhev (at) ikp.uni-koeln.de).

Main lecturers:

  • Prof. Dr. Antonio M. Moro (University of Sevilla, Spain)
  • Dr. Karl-Oskar Zell (University of Cologne, Germany)

Exercises and Hands-on:

  • Prof. Dr. Antonio M. Moro (University of Sevilla, Spain)
  • Dr. Karl-Oskar Zell (University of Cologne, Germany)
  • Dr. Andrey Blazhev (University of Cologne, Germany)

On Monday to Wednesday afternoons, as well as on Thursday early afternoon there will be exercises with computer codes (programs). Therefore, one can bring its own laptop, or 2-3 people can share one. The programs are running on our Linux servers, thus the laptops should have "ssh clients" with X11 display redirection and local Xserver (under Linux these are intrinsic, for OS X probably one needs to install "XQuartz", and for Windows see for example "MobaXterm"). Further help and explanations would be provided during the Intensive week.

Time and Place:

  • Mon 10 - 17
  • Tue-Thu  09 - 17
  • Fri  09 - 14 (endtime changed)
  • including lunch breaks and afternoon coffee breaks

The week will start on Monday 16.09.2019 at 10:00 and most of the time will take place in the seminar room of the Institute for Nuclear Physics (IKP) at the University of Cologne. Only some hands-on sessions on Thursday and Friday afternoon will take place in the target lab of the institute.
